Some of my girlfriend’s remarks on the “Rembrandt & the Dutch Golden Age” exhibit currently at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville, TN

“Look at the puppy!”
-Almost every painting we looked at

“My favorite part of this one is that the dogs and the deer are playing. You never see dogs and deer playing.”
-On a painting titled “Stag Hunt”

“[Walks up; looks] This one reminds me of Oregon Trail [Walks away]”
-On a painting of a 17th century highway robbery

“I don’t like this one. The water looks choppy, like when you go waterskiing and it’s like ‘THUD THUD THUD THUD THUD.’”
-On a painting titled “The Calm Sea”

“He’s smoking weed.”

[I voice skepticism]

“No, I can tell by his hat—he’s smoking weed.”

On a painting of a man smoking a pipe

We then walked upstairs to an exhibit on Ancient artifacts from the Americas, which consisted mainly of small statues and painted pottery.

“I feel like someone just went to Haiti, bought all this stuff and brought it back.”

We then left.
